Summary

Sometimes all you need is one person to really see you。

Piper Parrish's life on Frick Island—a tiny, remote town smack in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay—is nearly perfect。 Well, aside from one pesky detail: Her darling husband, Tom, is dead。 When Tom's crab boat capsized and his body wasn't recovered, Piper, rocked to the core, did a most peculiar thing: carried on as if her husband was not only still alive, but right there beside her, cooking him breakfast, walking him to the docks each morning, meeting him for their standard Friday night dinner date at the One-Eyed Crab。 And what were the townspeople to do but go along with their beloved widowed Piper?

Anders Caldwell’s career is not going well。 A young ambitious journalist, he’d rather hoped he’d be a national award-winning podcaster by now, rather than writing fluff pieces for a small town newspaper。 But when he gets an assignment to travel to the remote Frick Island and cover their boring annual Cake Walk fundraiser, he stumbles upon a much more fascinating tale: an entire town pretending to see and interact with a man who does not actually exist。 Determined it’s the career-making story he’s been needing for his podcast, Anders returns to the island to begin covert research and spend more time with the enigmatic Piper—but he has no idea out of all the lives he’s about to upend, it’s his that will change the most。

Charming , nostalgic and reminiscent of home 。 Its emblematic of many small towns on the Chesapeake , although it is a story loosely based on Smith Island, down to their famous cake。 Marylanders -worth a read。

I loved this! Novels about small close knit towns with a quirky cast of characters always gets me! This one was full of emotion and I loved Anders!

Great story, great characters, really enjoyed it!

So very quaint。 Frick Island reminded me of Stewart Island but smaller and with less internet。

The premise is interesting for sure, but it lacks, for a better word, “oomph”。

*4。5 stars。 Rounded up because this was so charming and original。 Normally, I don't really picture the the setting when reading (I know, weird right?), but Oakley's descriptions of the island created a vivid picture。 I loved the eccentric islanders who reminded me of a mix between Anne of Green Gables and Gilmore Girls characters。 There was even a scene with neighbours spying out the window and speculating that Anders "was holding her hand" (IYKYK)。 A delightful summer read。 *4。5 stars。 Rounded up because this was so charming and original。 Normally, I don't really picture the the setting when reading (I know, weird right?), but Oakley's descriptions of the island created a vivid picture。 I loved the eccentric islanders who reminded me of a mix between Anne of Green Gables and Gilmore Girls characters。 There was even a scene with neighbours spying out the window and speculating that Anders "was holding her hand" (IYKYK)。 A delightful summer read。 。。。more

I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway。The premise is what hooked me, but as I read it, it became too far fetched。 I found the main character, Anders, to be whiny and unlikeable。 There were too many “red herrings” throughout that didn’t amount to anything。 Glad I didn’t spend my money on this one。

Totally unexpected。。 not sure what I was getting into but loved it。 It was heartwarming and whimsical。 There was a chapter that made me even think of murder mystery!!!! 😭 if my hubby died, I may even mourn like piper and I hope my people would entertain the idea and let me grieve the way I want to。 ❤️ this book gives you hope and you only need 1 true person to really see you。 🦦

A sweet read! A small island filled with quirky islanders that slowly makes room for Anders a young newspaper reporter/podcaster looking for that big story。

3。5 rounded up。 It came through with the vibe I needed — RTC。

I can see why this was so popular on Instagram。 It has immediately become one of my favorite books of the year。 Anders is a frustrated journalist looking for his big break。 He’s sure he’s not going to find it at the Frick Island cake walk。 But then he meets Piper。Piper is a gorgeous, charming much-loved resident of Frick Island。 So loved, in fact, that when her husband goes missing at sea, but Piper claims to still be able to see him, the whole island decides to go along with it。 Anders uses Pip I can see why this was so popular on Instagram。 It has immediately become one of my favorite books of the year。 Anders is a frustrated journalist looking for his big break。 He’s sure he’s not going to find it at the Frick Island cake walk。 But then he meets Piper。Piper is a gorgeous, charming much-loved resident of Frick Island。 So loved, in fact, that when her husband goes missing at sea, but Piper claims to still be able to see him, the whole island decides to go along with it。 Anders uses Piper as material for his podcast, but he finds himself falling for her。This island feels as real to me now as a place I’ve visited。 Every one of the residents will win your heart, from BobDan who runs the very unreliable ferry, to Pearl Olecki, who’s fighting the installation of the town’s first cell tower。 This book is sweet, charming and ingenious, with impeccably timed twists。 Perfect for the beach or anywhere you want to relax。 。。。more

This book captivated me so much I read it in less than 24 hours。In actuality I just could not put it down。A young woman Piper Parrish loves living on Frick Island—a tiny, remote town smack in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay。 population 93。 There is one small problem though her husband is dead。His crab boat capsized and his body was never recovered so she carries on as if he is till alive, talking to him and doing daily activities with him as if her were still here。She expect's the island's othe This book captivated me so much I read it in less than 24 hours。In actuality I just could not put it down。A young woman Piper Parrish loves living on Frick Island—a tiny, remote town smack in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay。 population 93。 There is one small problem though her husband is dead。His crab boat capsized and his body was never recovered so she carries on as if he is till alive, talking to him and doing daily activities with him as if her were still here。She expect's the island's other inhabitants to do the same and amazingly they do。When outsider journalist Anders Caldwell looking to boost his skills and career comes to the island for a very boring assignment learns of the strange but fascinating way and entire town speaks to and interacts with a man that is not there he believes he's got a hot scoop。 The more time he spends with Piper the more he find himself falling for her。This one is different from what I have read before but it has captivated me。Pub Date 25 May 2021 I was given a complimentary copy of this book。 Thank you。All opinions expressed are my own。 。。。more

This was a decent read, but I think it suffered from dealing with heavy subject matter (being widowed) in too light a tone。 Piper and Anders' chemistry also felt off to me。 Not sure how I feel about the ending as well。 What was fun to read, and where the author's research/passion really shines through, was the information about life on a small island and how climate change threatens/affects that。 Love the premise, not so much the (heh) execution。 This was a decent read, but I think it suffered from dealing with heavy subject matter (being widowed) in too light a tone。 Piper and Anders' chemistry also felt off to me。 Not sure how I feel about the ending as well。 What was fun to read, and where the author's research/passion really shines through, was the information about life on a small island and how climate change threatens/affects that。 Love the premise, not so much the (heh) execution。 。。。more

I wanted to like this book and hung on through its slow pace hoping to feel connected to the characters or the characters to each other。 Both fell flat for me。 The attraction between the main characters felt forced and the point of view being mainly first person from Anders but then occasionally first person Piper was odd。

This book was insane in the best way possible。 As a reader, you fell in love with Frick Island and all of the hard-working characters。 I loved watching the character development of Anders and how each person on Frick Island slowly started opening up to him。 This book discusses the hardship a small town and community goes through and how hard it is to let other “big companies” come in。 This book was filled with love and laughter! It truly made me think how far I go along with something for someon This book was insane in the best way possible。 As a reader, you fell in love with Frick Island and all of the hard-working characters。 I loved watching the character development of Anders and how each person on Frick Island slowly started opening up to him。 This book discusses the hardship a small town and community goes through and how hard it is to let other “big companies” come in。 This book was filled with love and laughter! I almost abandon this book several times, but kept plugging along because it was recommended by another author that I absolutely adore。 Honestly it wasn’t until around page 309 of the 334 total that I perked up a bit。 I definitely don’t get the hype of this one。

Denise Ebersbach

This was a cute and quirky book I really liked the beginning and the end but about 3/4 of the way through I thought that that section could have been left out without affecting the storyline。

This is my first book by Colleen Oakley and it definitely won’t be my last! I loved this story! She is such an incredible writer! I loved each and every one of the characters and wish I could travel to Frick Island myself。 Can’t wait to check out Colleen’s other books!! Thank you to the publisher and Goodreads for this giveaway book!

I was really excited for this because the premise sounded so unique, and I love books about small towns。 Unfortunately, I felt like this novel was slow and longer than it needed to be。

The Invisible Husband of Frick Island by Colleen Oakley is a genuine and delightful novel。 I need to visit Smith Island, which loosely inspired this book。 Colleen Oakley created the best cast of characters, including the main character Piper。 She marries her high school sweetheart Tom。 However, he disappears into the ocean during a fishing trip。 It was interesting to see how the whole town protected Piper after Tom vanished into the sea。 This was a great change of pace from the books I've been r The Invisible Husband of Frick Island by Colleen Oakley is a genuine and delightful novel。 I need to visit Smith Island, which loosely inspired this book。 Colleen Oakley created the best cast of characters, including the main character Piper。 She marries her high school sweetheart Tom。 However, he disappears into the ocean during a fishing trip。 It was interesting to see how the whole town protected Piper after Tom vanished into the sea。 This was a great change of pace from the books I've been reading。 I recommend this book as a perfect summer read。 Thank you, Berkley, for this complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

This book was so much fun to read。 I fell in love with quirky Frick Island and all of its inhabitants。 Piper's husband was lost at sea, and yet the entire island goes along with her delusion that he isn't dead。 Then Anders, an ambitious journalist, stumbles on the pretense。 He knows there's a story here that could launch his podcasting career if he can uncover the truth。 It seems simple enough until he finds himself falling for Piper, and the island itself。Part mystery, part romance, the story s This book was so much fun to read。 I fell in love with quirky Frick Island and all of its inhabitants。 Piper's husband was lost at sea, and yet the entire island goes along with her delusion that he isn't dead。 Then Anders, an ambitious journalist, stumbles on the pretense。 He knows there's a story here that could launch his podcasting career if he can uncover the truth。 It seems simple enough until he finds himself falling for Piper, and the island itself。Part mystery, part romance, the story says a lot about hope, faith, and believing in people (and in yourself。) I dare you not to feel good after you've finished it! 。。。more

This was book 5 of our Bookstagram Book Club。。。and it didn't disappoint! I really enjoyed this book!I've been in such a reading slump。。。that I needed a "feel good" book。This is the story about Frick Island。。。and the close nit community that lives there。 They are backward and slow to move forward in today's society。 No internet connection, no alcohol and only one child living on the island。 If you aren't living there, they don't let you in with open arms。。。you are considered a 'come over' (meanin This was book 5 of our Bookstagram Book Club。。。and it didn't disappoint! I really enjoyed this book!I've been in such a reading slump。。。that I needed a "feel good" book。This is the story about Frick Island。。。and the close nit community that lives there。 They are backward and slow to move forward in today's society。 No internet connection, no alcohol and only one child living on the island。 If you aren't living there, they don't let you in with open arms。。。you are considered a 'come over' (meaning: you came over from the mainland)。That's not the real story though。 Piper is a 20 something who was once a come over。 In sixth grade, her and her mom moved to the island so that her mom could look into helping the island from eroding (per se) from global warming。 Her mom's opinion was not taken well。。。so eventually she moved, but Piper stayed。 Piper fell in love with Tom and married。 One day, Tom left for his job as a crabber and his boat capsized。 Tom never made it home and was presumed dead。Piper took Tom missing hard。 So hard in fact that she imagined that Tom was still with her。 She walked him to the marina every day to go crabbing, talked to him in the streets and acted like he had never left。 Amazingly, the people on the island who love her so much go along with her delusion。 That is until a journalist, Anders Cauldwell comes to the island to report on the renowned yearly Cake Walk。 Anders sees the situation with Piper and thinks that there is a better story there than the cake walk。 Anders is determined to help Piper face reality, all while publishing a podcast about her story (in hopes of becoming famous AND possibly helping others)。 As with all situations of this kind。。。what do you think happens????This was such a lovey and hopeful read。 It was full of unconditional love, happiness and a journey about what one is capable of in life and death。 I said that this was a light read, and it was! However, it also dealt with some deep emotional issues。 I really, really enjoyed it! I know that if you are looking for something to lift your spirits。。。this just might be the book!Makes me want to visit my friend that knows where this real island is。。。and see this happy place for myself! 。。。more
